Welcome to the website of the South Texas Section of the AIChE!

We are one of the largest local sections of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Our section is located around the greater Houston area.

Who are we and what do we do? Check out the information on the About Us page. Click --> Here!.

When's our next meeting?

The next STS-AIChE meeting will be held October 2, 2008, at the Hilton Houston Hobby Airport. The October meeting is graciously sponsored by ENVIRON, Inc. The dinner meeting topic is Biological Wastewater Processing.

In addition to our regular four workshops, the STS and ENVIRON are presenting a day-long wastewater seminar and exhibition! See below for more details.

Registration is not yet open for the meeting; check back about 2 weeks before for more details.

Coming Events

The South Texas Section of AIChE and ENVIRON International Corp. are hosting an Industrial Wastewater Treatment Seminar and Environmental Symposium at the Hilton Hobby Hotel on October 2, 2008 beginning at 9 AM, and ending in time for the workshops of the October dinner meeting.
The seminar presenters include ENVIRON principals Carl Adams, Sam Shelby, Andy Edwards, and Pat Campbell-leaders in design and operational techniques for the Activated Sludge Process. The event will provide seven professional development hours (7 PDH) for professional license holders. Breakfast and lunch will be served and a day-long exhibition forum will take place simultaneously, featuring local environmental service providers and engineering firms.

The AIChE Presents the Gulf Coast Butadiene Producers Symposium: Topics in Reliability, Sponsored by Baker Petrolite, on Friday, October 10, 2008 at the South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center in Clear Lake, Texas. This symposium and associated exhibition allows attendees to discuss and learn about topics of interest to butadiene producers. Many opportunities to interface with other butadiene plant personnel in the region will be provided. Symposium topics include equipment design, feedstock concerns, reliability benchmarking and monitoring. For full details visit the website http://www.sts-aiche.org/Butadiene_Symposium_Reliability.pdf. Hurry - spots are limited and registrations are due by Friday, September 26th!

Engineering Science & Technology Council of Houston (ECH) [www.echhouston.org] and constituent societies are sponsoring a half-day (8:30AM-12:30PM) Leadership Development Conference on October 18, 2008 (Saturday) at the Willow Creek Conference Center at the University of Houston - Downtown. To encourage attendance, the cost was held to $15 per person to defray the cost of breakfast, materials, and parking.
The purpose of the conference is to enable ECH member societies to sharpen the leadership and management skills of their current and future leaders. As the first of several semiannual half-day seminars, this conference will address strategic planning: what goes into a strategic plan, how to effectively determine what your members want, and how to formulate a strategic plan. While each society is unique, many of these skills are transferable, and you can learn from other societies who will be attending. You can also explore areas for joint activities with other societies. More information is coming soon. For additional details contact Matt Kolodney at MKOLODNE@tceq.state.tx.us or 713-471-8956.

Educational Opportunities

Are you interested in obtaining an advanced degree? The University of Houston's Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering offers several masters level programs in the chemical engineering discipline tailored for the working professional. Many of the courses are taught in the later afternoon or evening and research projects can be conducted in the evening and weekends. Programs are available for a non-thesis Master of Chemical Engineering, thesis-based Master of Science, or course-based Master of Science. Visit the UofH website http://www.chee.uh.edu/UH_CHBE_Flyer_MN1.pdf  for more details, and the site http://www.chee.uh.edu for information about the department.
